Who is General Vanier?
Georges-Philéas Vanier (1888-1967) is a Canadian soldier, diplomat and statesman. In 1915, he was one of the founding members of 22nd French-Canadian Battalion, which became the Royal 22e Régiment. He received the Military Cross in 1916, and the Distinguished Service Order in 1919. Seriously injured near Chérisy in 1918, he lost his right leg.
His career continued in diplomacy: he sat on the League of Nations and became, in 1944, the first Canadian ambassador to France.
In 1959, he was appointed the 19th Governor General of Canada, the first French Canadian to hold this office. Deeply attached to the unity of the country, he worked for dialogue between Francophones and Anglophones and left the Vanier Institute of the Family. In 1988, the magazine Maclean’s named him the most significant Canadian in history.
What is the Royal 22e Regiment?
Created on October 21, 1914 under the name 22nd Battalion (French Canadian), the Royal 22e Regiment the “Van Doos” is the only entirely French-speaking regular infantry regiment in Canada. It was created in response to sustained calls from the French-speaking population for a unit where they can serve in their mother tongue.
It distinguished itself during the First World War at Flers-Courcelette, Vimy and Chérisy, two of its members received the Victoria Cross. The title of « Royal » was granted in in 1921, and its current name was adopted in 1928. Since then, the regiment has taken part in all of Canada’s major military engagements, from the Second World War to Afghanistan, Korea and United Nations peacekeeping missions.
Today it has five battalions, three from the Regular Force and two from the Reserve. Its headquarters is at Citadelle de Québec and the majority of its regular force is at Base Valcartier. It constitutes the largest French-speaking military unit in North America.
What is the mission of the Foundation?
A registered charity, the Fondation Général Vanier helps members and provides financial support for programs and services intended to strengthen the regimental family, as well as to preserve, enhance and develop the cultural heritage of the regiment.
When was the Foundation founded?
The provincial charter of Fondation Général Vanier de l’Association du 22e inc. was officially adopted and registered on November 8, 1967.
Who are the beneficiaries of the Foundation?
Beneficiaries are serving and retired members of the Royal 22e Regiment, their immediate family, as well as cadets of the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps affiliated with the regiment.
Subject to the approval of the board of directors, the Foundation may consider other beneficiaries on an extraordinary and time-limited basis.
